Researching Indie/Alternative music and artists- Miss Mapp

Indie rock is a sub-genre of alternative rock that originated in the United Kingdom and the United States in the 1980s. Indie rock is derived from "independent", describes the small and relatively
low budget labels on which it is released and the do-it-yourself attitude of the bands and artists involved. For examples artists like
Bon Iver
The BIG Pink
Bright eyes
Colby Caillat
Jason Mraz
A Fine Frenzy


They tend to create music that is personal and normally includes some form of guitar. Acoustic styles are also extremely popular in this genre of music.

For example here her songs are all about love and natural things and she reflects this in her album cover. She is pictured here with simple natural looking hair, very subtle make up and a simple smile. She sends out a genuine message

and her songs reflect her beauty and nature.

We can see here especially that indie/alternative artists can be very independent and unique. This album cover is so simple yet striking. It is done in a way that looks lie a 10 year old has drawn it, possibly giving the artist a fun loving, uncomplicated image. This could also reflect his song names and lyrics. It gives us the impression that he doesn't want or like to be centre of attention. This makes his image seem alot more genuine and likable. He isn't striking a pose which i would associate with an R&B artist or a pop princess.

We can see here the bands (made up of all guys) album cover focuses
on a female orientation. The girl is naked but not much is shown which
intrigues especially the male audience. We can see that it is set up using a sepia/B&W effect which makes it look vintage. Again showing the audience they are unique and are settling to a very individual look label. It also makes the band seem more genuine than others again by not focussing on them selves and their own personal image. However it does support the "sex appeal" theory. This would make it more appealing to the male audience but keeps the female audience in maybe a indie role model way. Girls who listen to indie music usually aspire to look like the band/artist by dressing the same, speaking the same, looking the same etc.
